Lightning Protection Mast vs High Mast Lighting

Two completely different structures that share three letters and get confused every day. If you searched for one and landed on pages about the other, this page is why.

A lightning protection mast is an earthing structure. Its job is to present the highest point in a protected zone, intercept a strike, and carry the current safely to an earth electrode. It carries an air terminal and a down conductor and it is bonded into the earthing system.

A high mast lighting pole is a lighting structure. Its job is to hold a ring of floodlights twenty or thirty metres up, usually with a raise-and-lower headframe so the lamps can be serviced at ground level.

They are designed to different criteria, connected to different systems, and bought by different departments. The only thing they genuinely share is that both are tall steel structures.

Both are wind-governed steel structures, which is the reason a fabricator is involved in either. Everything else about them differs.

Why this page exists

Because search engines resolve “lightning mast” to lighting masts in the large majority of results. We checked: on the phrase as most people type it, eight of nine results were about high mast lighting. Someone looking for lightning protection is being routed to floodlight suppliers, and vice versa.

There is no good reason for that to keep happening, so this page states the difference plainly. It is a disambiguation page, not a product page.

What is the difference between a lightning mast and a lighting mast?

A lightning protection mast intercepts a lightning strike and conducts it to earth as part of an earthing system. A high mast lighting pole elevates floodlights over a large area. Different purpose, different design discipline, different buyer — they are only confused because the words look alike.

Does Indo East manufacture lightning protection masts?

We fabricate and galvanize steel structures to a customer's approved drawing. We do not design lightning protection systems or supply the air terminals, conductors and electrodes that make up one. Send the drawing and we will tell you plainly what falls inside our scope.

Do you supply high mast lighting poles?

We do not supply lighting fixtures, lantern carriages, lowering gear or control equipment. Steel fabrication to an approved drawing is what we do.

Which standard covers earthing?

IS 3043 is the Indian code of practice for earthing. Note that the material standards are separate: galvanized earthing strand is IS 12776 and stay wire is IS 2141.

What wind speed are tall structures in Howrah designed for?

Kolkata and Howrah sit at a basic wind speed of 50 m/s under IS 875 Part 3 — Zone V, the highest band in India. Tall slender structures are wind-governed, so that figure sizes them.
