Pole Line Hardware

Cross arms, stay sets, brackets, yoke plates, clamps and dead-end fittings — fabricated and hot-dip galvanized on one floor at Howrah. Line hardware is small, cheap and the first thing to fail on a distribution line, which is why the coating figure matters more than the price per piece.

Indo East manufactures and galvanizes pole line hardware and line fittings at its Jangalpur works in Howrah — cross arms, stay sets and rods, plates, brackets, yoke plates, clamps and dead-end fittings, for 11 kV and 33 kV distribution and for transmission line work. Steel to IS 2062, fittings to IS 2486, hot-dip galvanized to IS 2629 and IS 4759 at 75–85 microns in our own 7 metre kettle.

Two things about this page are unusual, and both are deliberate. First, it names IS 2486 — the standard your utility specification is actually written in, and one we have not found cited on a single competing hardware page. Second, it says which items we make, which our jobbers make to our drawings, and which we buy in. A buyer finds that out eventually. It is better said at enquiry than discovered at inspection.

Suspension clamps, tension clamps and insulator hardware are supplied alongside the structures they fit. Where a drawing or a dimensional reference exists, work is to that drawing rather than to a catalogue number.

Made at our Howrah works. The fabricated steel — cross arms, stay sets and rods, stay and anchor plates, pole clamps, pole top and D-iron brackets, yoke plates, eye bolts, U-bolts and danger boards. Our own floor, our own kettle, our own coating readings.

Made to our drawings by our jobbers, galvanized in our own kettle, released under our inspection. The forged, wire-formed and cast items — guy grips and preformed dead ends, armour rods, ball hooks and socket eyes, compression joints, PG clamps and vibration dampers. These need forging, wire forming or casting, which are not processes we run. They are made to our specification, they are coated here, and they carry our inspection release.

Bought in and supplied against the specification. Standard fasteners — machine bolts, double arming bolts and shackle bolts.

The West Bengal state utility specification for compression type tension hardware fittings cites Parts 1, 2 and 3 by name, alongside IS 2629, IS 4759, IS 6745 and IS 2633 for the coating and its tests. Fastener grades

Bolt grades in this category are specified under IS 1367, and the ones that appear are 4.6, 5.6 and 8.8. The grade changes the source and the price and it is invisible in a comparison table, so it belongs in the enquiry rather than in a post-award clarification.

How to specify hardware so a quotation is comparable

  • The item, with its drawing or dimensional reference. A quantity of “cross arms” with no section and no drawing cannot be priced.
  • The IS 2486 parts that apply, where the fitting is an insulator fitting.
  • The coating figure, in microns or g/m². This is the line on which quotations differ most.
  • The fastener grade under IS 1367.
  • Whether NABL-accredited test reports are required, and dated within what period. Several state utility specifications demand them.
  • Whether third-party inspection applies — and which agency. We work with SGS, Bureau Veritas, TUV and Intertek, and with customer-nominated agencies.

Why buy hardware with the structures

Hardware is usually a small line on a substation or line order, and usually the line that arrives late, from a different vendor, at a different coating. Fabricated and galvanized here, it carries the same coating standard, the same batch readings and the same inspection release as the structures it fits, and it ships in the same consignment.

That is a scheduling argument rather than a technical one. On a line waiting to be energised, scheduling is the argument that matters.

What pole line hardware does Indo East manufacture?

We fabricate and hot-dip galvanize the steel fittings on our own floor: cross arms in straight, V and Y forms, HT and LT stay sets, stay rods, stay and anchor plates, eye bolts, pole clamps, pole top brackets, D-iron brackets, yoke plates, U-bolts and danger boards. Forged, wire-formed and cast items are manufactured to our drawings by our jobbers, galvanized in our own kettle and supplied under our inspection. Standard fasteners such as machine bolts, double arming bolts and shackle bolts are bought in. We say which is which rather than presenting everything as our own manufacture.

Which standard governs line hardware fittings?

IS 2486 is the standard for metal fittings of insulators for overhead power lines above 1000 V. Part 1 covers general requirements, Part 2 the dimensional requirements, Part 3 locking devices and Part 4 the tests. Indian utility purchase specifications are written in this language, and West Bengal's own specification for compression type tension hardware cites Parts 1, 2 and 3 directly. It is worth naming in your enquiry, because it is the clause a comparable quotation is built on.

What galvanizing do you hold on hardware?

IS 2629 for the process and IS 4759 for the coating, at 75 to 85 microns, read on a calibrated DFT gauge and reported per batch. IS 6745 and IS 2633 cover the coating mass and uniformity tests. Where a utility specification states 610 g per square metre, that is the same requirement expressed by mass rather than thickness, and it works out at roughly 85 microns.

Do you galvanize the bought-in and jobber-made items too?

Yes. Whatever the origin of the component, the zinc goes on in our own 7 metre kettle at Howrah, on the same line and against the same coating readings as the structures. That is the point of the arrangement: one coating standard and one set of DFT records across the whole bill of materials, rather than a bracket at one figure and a clamp at another.

What grade are the bolts?

Fastener grades are specified under IS 1367. Grades 4.6, 5.6 and 8.8 are the ones that appear in this category. Tell us the grade at enquiry rather than after award, because it changes both the source and the price and it is not visible in a comparison table.

Can you supply against a utility approved-vendor specification?

We supply eight state electricity utilities and hold ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015 and ISO 45001:2018. Where a specification requires NABL-accredited type-test reports dated within a stated period, our own laboratory is real but is not NABL-accredited, so that testing is arranged with an accredited laboratory against the order. It needs to be in the schedule from the start rather than discovered at inspection.

Will you supply hardware separately from structures?

Yes, hardware is quoted and supplied on its own. But it is usually cheaper and considerably less trouble shipped with the structures it fits, because it then carries the same coating standard, the same batch readings and the same inspection release, and arrives in the same consignment instead of turning up late from a different vendor at a different coating.

How should an enquiry be worded so the quotation is comparable?

Give the item with its drawing or dimensional reference, the steel and fastener grades, the coating figure in microns or grams per square metre, the quantity, and whether third-party inspection applies. An enquiry that says galvanized without a number cannot be compared across suppliers, because that single line is where quotations differ most.
