Export Packing & Container Loading

The part of an export order that decides whether the steel arrives in the condition it left in. Nobody in our peer set publishes this.

Galvanized steel weighs out long before it cubes out. A 20 ft container will reach its payload limit with the box barely a third full, so a loading plan for steel is a weight calculation first and a volume calculation second.

The counter-intuitive part: a 20 ft container carries more payload than a 40 ft one. Both share broadly the same maximum gross weight, and the 40 ft box's heavier tare eats into it. For dense cargo, two 20 ft containers move more steel than one 40 ft.

⚠ These are nominal figures for standard boxes. Actual tare is stamped on the door of the container you are given, and road authorities and shipping lines frequently impose limits below the ISO maximum. Loading is planned against the box supplied and the route, not against a table — but the table tells you which box to ask for.

How structures are bundled

  • Like with like. Members of the same section and length bundled together, so a site crew can find what they need without breaking every bundle.
  • Strapped, not wired loose. Steel strapping over timber or protective packing at the strap points, so the strap does not cut into the coating.
  • Timber dunnage between layers — dry, untreated. Resinous or treated timber can itself start corrosion where it sits against the zinc.
  • Spaced for air. Bundles separated so air moves between them. Tight nesting in a humid container is exactly the condition that produces white rust in transit, and a sea voyage through the tropics is a long time in a damp steel box.
  • No plastic wrapping. It traps condensation. If a barrier is required for a specific reason, it has to be a breathable one and it has to be agreed at order stage.
  • Bolts, nuts and small hardware crated separately and marked, not loose in with the structure.

Loading and securing

  • Weight distributed along the floor, not concentrated over one section. A container floor carries a point-load limit as well as a total limit.
  • Long members loaded through the door end first and blocked so nothing shifts on the roll of a ship.
  • Lashing and blocking to prevent longitudinal and lateral movement. Galvanized steel that moves in transit arrives with the coating scraped at every contact point.
  • Loading photographs taken before the doors close. They cost nothing and they settle a damage claim.
  • Container seal number recorded and stated on the packing list.

Marking

  • Every bundle tagged with the order reference, item mark, section, quantity and weight, matching the packing list line for line.
  • Marks legible after handling. Stencilling or steel tags rather than paint on the members themselves — paint on a face that has to be galvanized is a coating defect waiting to happen, and paint applied after galvanizing rubs off in transit.
  • Gross and net weight per bundle on the tag, so the receiving crew can plan lifting.
  • Handling instructions where a member is slender or awkward, marked on the bundle rather than buried in an email.

Destination port, the incoterm, and whether the consignment is going into immediate erection or into site storage. That last one changes the packing: steel that will sit in a yard for three months before erection needs to be bundled for ventilation, not for density.
