Shipping From Howrah

Where we are, how steel gets from our gate to a ship, and the honest version of what our location does and does not give you.

Indo East is at Jalan Industrial Complex, Jangalpur, on NH-6 in Howrah — about 22 km from Kolkata Port, with direct highway access for trailer movement. For a heavy, low-value-per-tonne cargo like fabricated steel, inland haulage is a real cost and a real risk, and 22 km of it is a genuine advantage over a works inland.

The honest qualification: Kolkata is a riverine port with draft limitations, so very large vessels call at Haldia further down the Hooghly instead. Which of the two a consignment moves through is a routing decision made with the line at booking, not something we decide in advance.

The route

StageWhat happens
1. Works, JangalpurBundled, marked and weighed. Loading photographs taken.
2. NH-6Direct highway access from the gate — no city-centre routing for trailers
3. Container stuffingFactory stuffing at our works, or at a CFS depending on the incoterm and the line
4. CustomsShipping bill filed by our customs broker; examination as required
5. PortKolkata (Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port) or Haldia, per the routing agreed with the line
6. VesselTransit time and connections confirmed by the line at booking

We do not publish transit times to destination ports, because they are set by the service, the transhipment hub and the season rather than by us. A forwarder's schedule at the time of booking is the only figure worth quoting, and we would rather give you that than a number from a brochure.

Why the location matters for steel

  • Inland haulage is expensive per tonne and hard on the coating. Every additional kilometre of road is another opportunity for load shift, strap damage and handling. 22 km is short.
  • Eastern India is closer to South East Asia than the western ports are, and the eastern seaboard is the natural gateway for that direction. It is further from the Gulf and East Africa than a west-coast works would be. We say both.
  • NH-6 access means trailers do not route through a city. That matters for over-length members and for schedule reliability.
  • The port is a working commercial port with a full container service, not a specialist facility we have to book around.

Our export record, stated plainly

Indo East has completed one direct export — fabricated structural steel shipped to the Maldives in January 2018, by us, from our own works, through Kolkata Port, under our own Import Export Code. Indo East steel is also installed on a 50 MW solar project in Togo, West Africa, supplied through a client rather than shipped by us.

Those are the only two. We state that rather than implying a wider footprint, because an overseas buyer's first act is to check, and because a supplier who is straight about a short record is easier to trust on everything else. We are actively accepting direct export orders.

Questions engineers ask

Answered from our own line, not from the standard's cover page.

How far is Indo East from Kolkata Port?

About 22 km, with direct NH-6 access from the works gate. Haldia is the deep-draft alternate further down the Hooghly, used where vessel size requires it.

Which port do your exports go through?

Kolkata (Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port) or Haldia, depending on the vessel and the service. It is a routing decision made with the shipping line at booking rather than something fixed in advance.

What are your transit times to overseas ports?

We do not publish them, because they are set by the service, the transhipment hub and the season rather than by us. The line's schedule at the time of booking is the only figure worth relying on, and we will get it for you.

How many countries has Indo East exported to?

One, directly: the Maldives, in January 2018, under our own Import Export Code. Indo East steel is also installed on a 50 MW solar project in Togo, supplied through a client rather than shipped by us. We state that plainly rather than implying more.

Can you stuff containers at your works?

Yes, where the incoterm and the line allow it. Factory stuffing means the steel is handled once rather than twice, which matters for a galvanized coating.
