The white powder that appears on a stack of new galvanized steel after a wet week. Usually cosmetic, occasionally serious, and almost entirely preventable by how the material is stacked.
White rust is accelerated corrosion of fresh zinc in a wet, airless space. It appears as a white or grey powdery deposit, most often on newly galvanized articles that have been closely stacked and stored or shipped damp with poor ventilation.
Newly galvanized steel is the vulnerable case. Zinc exposed to open air develops a stable protective film of zinc carbonate over the first weeks, and that film is what gives galvanizing its long life. Trapped moisture with no air circulation prevents that film forming, and the bare zinc corrodes fast instead.
It is not the same thing as red rust. Red rust means the steel underneath is corroding. White rust means the zinc is doing its job, in the wrong conditions, too quickly.

The test that settles the argument is a DFT gauge reading after cleaning. If the remaining coating still meets the specification, the material is acceptable regardless of how it looked. If it does not, no amount of cleaning fixes it.
Almost all of it is about air and drainage.
Howrah and Kolkata are humid for a large part of the year and monsoon rain is heavy. Material that would sit safely for a month in a dry climate can bloom here in a week if it is stacked flat and close under a tarpaulin.
We despatch with spacers and we say so on the packing note. If material is going into site storage for a long period before erection, tell us at order stage — how it is bundled and packed is worth getting right before it leaves rather than arguing about afterwards.

Air and drainage. Do not stack tight, separate items with dry untreated timber spacers, angle the stack so water runs off, store under cover in a ventilated place, and never wrap in plastic sheet.
Light deposits brush off with a stiff bristle brush. Medium ones clean off but need the remaining coating measured. Heavy deposits may need repair to ASTM A780 or stripping and re-galvanizing. Never paint over it.
No, and the difference matters. White rust is the zinc corroding — the coating is being consumed but the steel is protected. Red rust means the zinc is gone at that point and the steel itself is corroding.
