Standards Equivalence

What an overseas buyer's specification calls for, and the Indian standard that comes closest. With the real numbers beside each, because “equivalent” is a judgement, not a fact.

There is no such thing as an exact equivalent between national standards. Anyone who hands you a two-column table without figures is asking you to take their word for it.

So this page gives the nearest commercial equivalent in each direction with the governing numbers printed beside it, and says where the differences actually bite. Substituting one for another always needs the design engineer's approval — what this table does is let that conversation start from facts.

Structural steel

Nearest commercial equivalents. Yield and tensile in MPa.

India — IS 2062United States — ASTMEurope — EN 10025Note
E250 — 250 / 410A36 — 250 / 400–550S235 (235 / 360) or S275 (275 / 410)E250 sits between S235 and S275. Against S275 the tensile matches but check yield.
E350 — 350 / 490A572 Grade 50 — 345 / 450S355 — 355 / 470The closest of the three families. E350 is marginally above A572 Gr 50 on yield.
E410 — 410 / 540A572 Grade 60 — 415 / 520S420Specialised. Confirm availability before writing it into a specification.

Equivalence is about mechanical properties, not chemistry, toughness or supply condition. The IS 2062 sub-grade — A, BR, B0 or C — sets the Charpy impact requirement and has no direct counterpart in a bare ASTM grade designation. If the design needs toughness at low temperature, the sub-grade is the specification, not the yield figure. See the IS 2062 page.

The Indian and European requirements converge on 610 g/m² ≈ 85 microns. ASTM A123 asks for 100 microns on structural shapes — about 18% more zinc. That gap is the single most common reason an American and a European specification cannot be quoted at the same rate. Full detail on the comparison page.

Fasteners

India — IS 1367International — ISO 898-1United States — ASTMTensile / yield

5.65.6500 / 300 MPa
8.88.8A325, broadly800 / 640 MPa

IS 1367 follows the ISO 898 property class system directly, so those two are genuinely the same designation rather than an approximation. The ASTM column is the nearest structural bolt in common use, not an identity — dimensions, head marking and testing regimes differ. See the IS 1367 page for how the two digits work.

EN 1090 is a real certification with a real audit, and Indo East does not hold it. It governs factory production control and CE marking for structural steelwork placed on the European market. If a European contract requires EN 1090, we will say so at enquiry rather than after the order. We work to AWS D1.1 and IS 816 practice and welcome third-party inspection.

How to use this table in an enquiry

  • Send us the specification as written, in whatever standard it is written in. We would rather read the original than a translated summary.
  • Name the figure, not just the standard. “ASTM A123” leaves the material category and thickness open; “ASTM A123 Grade 100 on a 10 mm section” does not.
  • Treat any substitution as a decision for your engineer. We will state plainly what we can supply and to which standard, and we will not describe an approximate equivalent as an exact one.
  • Where we do not hold something, we say so — ASTM A123 and EN ISO 1461 are specifications a coating is supplied against rather than certificates a plant holds, and EN 1090 is a certification we do not have.

Questions engineers ask

Answered from our own line, not from the standard's cover page.

What is the ASTM equivalent of IS 2062 E250?

ASTM A36 is the nearest commercial equivalent — 250 MPa yield against E250's 250, with tensile of 400–550 MPa against 410. In Europe, E250 sits between S235 and S275. None of these are exact identities, and the IS 2062 sub-grade that sets Charpy toughness has no counterpart in a bare ASTM grade name.

Is IS 4759 equivalent to ASTM A123?

Not quite. For heavy structural sections IS 4759 requires 610 g/m², about 85 microns, while ASTM A123 asks for a 100 micron minimum average on structural shapes over a quarter inch. EN ISO 1461 lands on the Indian figure at 85 microns mean. A123 is the heaviest of the three.

Does Indo East hold EN 1090?

No. EN 1090 governs factory production control and CE marking for structural steelwork on the European market and it requires a real audit. We do not hold it and we say so at enquiry rather than after an order. We work to AWS D1.1 and IS 816 practice and support third-party inspection.

Can you supply steel to an ASTM specification?

We fabricate from IS 2062 material and will state the grade and sub-grade supplied along with the mill test certificates. Where a contract requires material certified to an ASTM grade specifically, that is a procurement question we answer at enquiry rather than assume.

Which fastener standard applies to my bolts?

IS 1367 follows the ISO 898-1 property class system directly, so 4.6, 5.6 and 8.8 mean the same thing in both. The ASTM structural bolts A307 and A325 are the nearest equivalents in common use but differ in dimensions, marking and testing.
